Gap Year New Zealand :: your questions :: Is New Zealand good for hiking?

Is New Zealand good for hiking?

You bet it is, although you might hear it more commonly referred to as tramping here. Many consider New Zealand to be one of the best hiking destinations in the world, not only because of its natural and geographical features and beauty, but also because of the whole outdoorsy attitude here. Trampers have a world of resources and amenities at their fingertips to enhance their experiences which range from free maps at tourist information centres to well-placed back country huts and camp-grounds to break up those multi-day hikes. New Zealand also has the Great Walks Ė hundreds of kilometres of tramping routes developed by the Department of Conservation which will get you among some of the most pristine scenery the country has to offer and which includes Fiordland, mountains, volcanic terrain, coasts and rainforest. If you want something more casual or donít have the time for the longer tramps the entire country is criss-crossed with vast networks of day hikes and rambling trails for all levels of fitness.
