Gap Year New Zealand :: your questions :: Does New Zealand have good beaches?

Does New Zealand have good beaches?

The quick answer is yes and no matter quite how you define good. There are tons of beaches; a fact in no way surprising when you take into account the mile upon mile of coastline of the two main islands and the hundreds of smaller islands. Beaches in New Zealand come in every category you could imagine too. These include the powder white sand and crystal turquoise-watered kind, those which rank as great surf beaches, heaps of the calm and sheltered swimming beach kind, a fair helping of the dramatic and driftwood strewn west coast beaches and plenty too which offer idyllic snorkelling. There are also plenty where your footprint on the sand might be the only one if you want to escape the crowds. There are far too many wonderful beaches to list but for starters check out those of the Coromandel and the Northland or Stewart Island for some of the most idyllic.
